i am hearing the term dynamic IR drop. Please explain me the concept behind it.

Based on the functionality of your chip, need to run functional simulations based on the application requirement. Generate or dump the VCD file to know the signal toggles. Then use these VCD files and convert them to SAIF format (switching Activity Information format) and use this file to the Dyanamic IR drop tool to know the IR drop values of your chip based on the dynamic activity.

IR comes from ohm's law V=IR. As technology is shrinking the voltage V is reducing and simultaniously I should be kept low. The power analysis now depends upon the R of the path (cmos). In different path there might be different R , hence more power dissipation. Dynamic IR drop is used to analyze the switching variation of IR drop in the different chip regions.

Two types of IR drop

1-static
2-dynamic

static means calculate the IR drop without using any switching activity inormation (without VCD) file. only specify the probabily and toggle rate it is called the Static IR Drop Analysis.

Dynamic IR means specify VCD file while calcu;ating IR drop so we can get more accyurate result it is called Dynamic.
